LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 [PC]

Finally a great game that can't be completed in a day!

Summary

Previously I've played all of the Lego series with the exception of Lego Rock band and this is without a doubt just as good as Lego Star Wars.

The game play is good, there are lots of little things to do in each level for example; save students in peril, get the high score, complete the quest and collect as many studs as possible! It's worth noting this also has one of the best multiplayer systems with drop in drop out on the same screen action. You also don't need to be a fan of Harry Potter to enjoy the impressive take on the series.

The game follows the usual layout with Diagon alley as the hub of the world but also features Hogwart's Castle as a place to explore not quite a hub but not always a level. It is also worth noting the Diagon alley is also filled with shops to spend those hard earned purple studs on, along with bonus levels and the chance to build your own mini levels to play through.

Throughout the game you learn multiple spells and skills through class rooms in the Castle and these can be put to use throughout the game world meaning that to get that all impressive perfect on every level you must replay almost every level in the game. This happens to be part of the beauty though, you can usually complete a level quite easily but the extra collectibles and challenges are there for players looking for a challenge.

The only things I dislike about this game are the controls can be fiddly especially if using a keyboard to switch between spells when this has clearly been designed with an analogue stick in mind. The other is the scenery can be a little incoherent. You can be walking along making torches along the wall burst into flame and then you realise that although the developers have a perfectly good Lego torch model they've chosen to use another model that is effectively exactly the same but not made of Lego on the next wall. I personally feel that maybe there should be more Lego Harry Potter and less realistic objects that are unnecessary. The same can be said for pumpkins in Hagrid's Garden Why when the Lego pumpkin looks so good do there need to be piles of realistic pumpkins next to it? But don't let that put you off. The game is fantastic and is definitely worth picking up.

A decent game. It is defiantly a game to get if you have enjoyed the previous games in the Lego series.

Summary

Lego Harry Potter is one of the more fun and enjoyable games of the Lego video game series. The difficulty is the same if not a even higher than the previous Lego games. It also is not disappointing with the large amount of characters. The graphics for this game are also very good making the game appear very realistic as the real Legos. The hub in this game is also much bigger to explore with several shop to buy character, gold brick, etc. The game is long and can take many days to complete. It also contains some of the better features added from the previous game, Lego Indiana Jones 2: The Adventure Continues, like the split screen and level builder. Also, like other Lego video games, it adds a humorous touch to the Harry Potter book and film series. I recommend this if you like both Harry Potter and the Lego video games.

That's great!

Summary

I picked this up on DS for one of my kids. After playing it myself for a while, I got the PC version. The graphics are simple so they play well on our older, secondary computer, but it still looks great. Gameplay is very fun. The tasks get somewhat repetitive, and trying to find those last few Golden Blocks and Character Pieces is sort of dull, but the heart of the game is a blast for kids and for adults who need a break from "grown-up" games. The co-op mode is brilliant; no more tug-of-war at the edges of the screen. This also makes it much easier to teach the younger set how to play and where to go.

This game is very, very long. A lot of games are relying on online multiplayer to "lengthen" them while throwing in a short single player story. Not so here. When I/we finished the first year, I thought we were done. In a "grown up" game I would have been. Turns out, we were less than 25% of the way through. After completing all years, there are a lot of reasons to go back as a dark wizard and do it again.

If you're a Harry Potter fan, a kid (or a kid at heart), then you'll love this. If for nothing else than to blast Malfoy into pieces.

Summary

This game has the same lego formula as pirates of the caribbean and star wars but still it is incredibly fun. The original soundtrack from the Harry Potter movies really makes you nostalgic and makes you feel good while casting spells and going to lessons or walking around Hogwarts. Even after the main story is complete there is still a wide variety things to be done, there are over 150 playable characters to collect! And getting all the gold and red bricks can take a couple of hours to do, but it ain't boring at all. You may feel that the game is too easy and it really is because the challenges are always the same, like rebuild some armour, or find ingredients for a potion to open a door.
This game may not be graphically outstanding or amazingly innovative but it is very fun to play worth the time you with it. Let us hope that 'years 5-7' is as good as this one!
