Summary

Zoo Tycoon is a business-building game, focusing on building and maintaining a zoo. In the beginning, you start with an empty lot and a certain amount of money, which you use to build your zoo. You will have to build exhibits and place animals, and other buildings like parks, drink stands and etc.

It is noticeable, that your animals will be happy only when you place them into the right environment to live in, for example you cannot place a polar bear in a savannah, or a lion along with penguins. Of course you can place different animals in the same cage, but this will result to a good feast for the lions or tigers.

The game provides special menus and statistics which will help you understand what is missing from your zoo, or what your animals would like. So, when your zoo is ready, guests will come to visit it, paying not only entrance fee, but also spending their money to buy hot dogs, cool drinks or souvenirs. To grow up your bussiness, you will have to hire staff who will work as visitors guides, cleaners or scientist researching on the animals and their behaviour.

Earning money will allow you to bring in more animals, better facilities and new things for the visitors to do and see. There are certain zoos you play in, which play the role of scenarios, a typical mode in tycoon games. These scenarios have a progressive difficulty, which is not visible at all. To be honest, the fact that difficult scenarios won't give you much time or money is not enough to make a scenario tough, at least for the keen players. Success in these scenarios is not something that will take time, as they are quite easy to accomplish. But sometimes some things are really simple to achieve, making some of the scenarios too easy and boring. But apart from the scenarios, you can play in a free mode, which is the real fun of the game.

Of course, sometime in the game, some animals may escape their exhibits, by climbing trees and jumping out, or by breaking the fences which hold them. In that case, you are able to call an emergency in the zoo and bring in specialists to get them back. Though it is not necessary by the time the escaping animal cannot harm your guests.

The game is detailed enough so you can check out the status not only of your animals, but also the status of your hired staff and of the visitors. Nevertheless, it is not necessary, except from the happiness of the staff and most important, the animals.

The visuals of the game are both responding and effective, but otherwise they have not something amazing to show. And the sound is also good, taking into consideration that your animals and visitors wil respond you if you are about to check their status. On the one hand, the game is not visually good, but on the other hand, there is no such necessity. It is still great fun. But it is a real pity that the camera can't zoom close enough to see the environment from a first-person view, or at least from a close-up. And the sound may be not stunning, still it is exactly what the game needs.

Zoo Tycoon is a game which you will enjoy very much, on condition that you have a bussiness mind. But even if you haven't, Zoo Tycoon is a perfect game for little children, or for those who feel alike.

Summary

Review for the Original Zoo Tycoon

Good 3 Points

1. Variety of Animals
2. Good Locations
3. Fun

Bad 3 Points

1. Graphics aren't so good.
2. Gets boring after a few weeks
3. Glitches.

Overall

A very good game. All the animals make it a great game. Its fun for younger kids but going into teens makes it boring very very quick. Good for immature people. Zoo Tycoon 2 is better for teens. Because this is very kiddy at times.

Why 7.5?

As it gets boring and is very kiddy its hard to enjoy which will take quite a bit of it. It almost hit the mark. Its a classic kiddy thing that young kids would enjoy more. Zoo tycoon 2 is better for 13-17. This is more 3-11. Its not hard its far too easy.

Game Ratings

Summary

Zoo tycoon is a game which will make you feel like a real zoo owner after a while, as long as you´re careful enough not to drag it into bankruptcy.

The games offers a wide array of animals, landscapes and building options. So you can design your zoo while keeping an eye on your incomes and outcomes, as you'll have to take different factors into account, such as donations, salaries, investigation financing, ticket prizes, and the needs of your visitors and animals.

Now, even though you can keep your zoo running forever, you'll get bored after you run out of species to get or space where to put them, and that will vary depending on the size of your zoo but, eventually, you'll want to either start over or stop playing.

Another aspect of the game which didn't seem to be on the developers mind was the graphics, since you can zoom the camera enough to see the bunch of pixels which compose every animal, person or object.

Putting that aside, since graphics aren't a determining factor in this kind of games, it´s a very good sim aimed mainly at people who like to play not with cute little animals, but with numbers.

Great, but not perfect. Still very fun to play.

Summary

Zoo Tycoon is an interesting game, straight forward enough, build your zoo and rake in the dough. But there is more to in in the fact that you build more than just exhibits you build stalls, restaurants, and all sorts of fun things. The graphics are in 2D and not very impressive by todays standards. The sound is OK but the animals though small are very interesting and you can watch them play with all the objects you have placed in the exhibit. If you want the challenge the missions in game are fun but short and only some are difficult enough to say "Man that was hard!" Don't get me wrong this game is very fun and enjoyable for all ages so long as you don't need intense and maniacal chaos in your game. Since it is older now it is getting quite cheap too. I would say that it is all and all a fun and a good game and I would give it as a recommendation to anyone who enjoys tycoon games.

Although the game is in perfect it is still loads of fun.

Summary

Zoo tycoon is a game with a lot of foundation. Coming from the company that has made many other tycoon games including all the roller coaster tycoon games, you automatically know this game will be good. The problem is that Zoo tycoon is nothing more than just good. The game play is extremely unique but it will bore you after awhile. Building a zoo can be a lot of fun but there is no story mode to expand on this fun idea. If there was a story mode of you trying to make your zoo the best and then making a chain of zoos across the US it would be a lot better. Also, as i said above the graphics are absolutely terrible even for a 2001 game. Overall Zoo tycoon is a new and unique experience with a few problems here and there but even with that it is still a good game.

Biggest Pros:
-Unique experience.
-Building a zoo is loads of fun.
-Many animals to choose from.
-Animals can eat people.
Biggest Cons:
-Terrible Graphics.
-Animals need too much trees.
-No story mode (besides scenarios).
-Game play can get boring.
