Left 4 Dead 2: The Passing [X360]

This DLC is hardly worth the points for a short, copy and paste, lackluster experience.

Summary

After the disappointment I heard from the 360 community about the left 4 dead 1 DLC (Crash Course) I decided that I wouldn't buy the next DLC until I've tried it for free. So when my sibling bought it on her console, I popped by to have a try on the passing.

The campaign starts off with the L4D2 survivors in front of a raised bridge talking to 1 of the 3 L4D1 survivors, they mention that the bridge generator was overrun with infected and have wounded with them. so the L4D2 must go round through the town to reach the other side so they can lower the generator and leave. Its that simple.

Other then three new maps to play on, very little has been added to the campaign. The campaign features it's own uncommon common infected the fallen survivor (like the Parish's SWAT infected) who either attacks or flees the scene if it spots the survivors and upon death drops a couple of items. Two new weapons are introduced, a golf club which is not different to any other melee and the M60 Heavy Machine gun which shreds anything that is in the user's firing line.

Another new feature is caches that appear through out the level at random, fixed points. Theses have a large (if not infinite) supply of a single item, these can be either grenade items or top-up items (pills and adrenaline) however it is rare for these to be in a area to be of any use. Other then the fallen survivor there is no other new enemies unless you count a skin swap for the witch and a pair of zombie skins.

Overall the campaign is lacklustre, there isn't anything new for players to experience the finale is just a scavenge like dead centre's but with some firing support from the 3 original survivors (the 4th is dead) which makes it even easier to fill up the generator as you will have 6 people covering you.

Nothing is added to the previous five campaigns which seem like a missed opportunity especially with the weapons and caches. Though campaign supports the other game modes (Versus, Scavenge and survival) its hardly worth paying the 560 Microsoft points and not feel slightly ripped off.

An addition to this is an extra game mode called Mutation. Mutation is a different game mode each week changed on the Thursday which it is either single player or multiplayer.
This off the bat feels like it should have been a free patch like Survival was for the previous game as it isn't restricted to the passing campaign. A blog has also been added to the main menu (but this is just a free update) where there is a weekly vote and the latest news about valve and its community.

The DLC hasn't fixed the Survivor AI which boarders on brain dead, seeming to have a 45 degree cone of sight and hearing, with many instances of player losing his life because none of the AIs noticed him hanging off the end of a smoker's tongue.

PC fans have little to complain about as this is free for them but 360 fans should really avoid this DLC as it feels too much like a recycle job with so many things that should have been free in it.

Summary

Whew! I have read A LOT of bad reviews for this DLC, and I still got it, suspicion free. I will say- if you don't like L4D2 and are hoping this is gonna make an impact, than you missed the whole point of L4D. "The Passing", in my eyes, is a more than capable new entry to the game, bridging the gap between "Dead Center" and "Dark Carnival". First and foremost: yes, it does feature the original L4DHeads (only, sanz Bill... poor fella), but you don't really see them. They are merely... throughout. Although, they do help from a Bird Eyes view, so, it's kinda cool... You'll see "Zoey Killed A Boomer" or "Francis Killed A Hunter" pop up... a lil something. But I digress, the actual "The Passing" DLC is worth the 800 points, in my eyes, because I like what it brings to the table. Aside from adding a new campaign and Achievments, it also allows a new game mode called "Mutations". This is a nice new way to play L4D2, changing the rules of survival up once a week (one week it could be a Loner deal- you with no teamates, and then next week- it's Chainsaw Massacre, which believe you me, is as cool as it sounds). So, no, it's not revolutionary. It's not "Point Lookout" or the RE5 Chapters, and while I would understand why people would see this as a waste of points, I have to ask myself- how well do they really like/love this game? As this is one of my favs, fully embodying a potential Zombie Apocalypse, I'm eating this DLC up. It's only 800 points, the new mode is cool, and it has a new set of Achievements. Where's the miss here?

Oh, and lemme just say this before I shut this down- I also like the idea Valve is going with. I liked L4D, but I love L4D2 (the survivors are EXCELLENT!) Instead of seeing a L4D3, I'd much rather support the ideas they still have left on this one, and am excited to see where they're gonna take them. So, if you're a big fan of L4D2 and are wondering whether this is a good buy or not- rest assured. This has nothing but Zombie brains splattered all over it! =)

Summary

Left 4 Dead 2 add on The Passing is great for anyone who loves to play Left 4 Dead. I`m not a freak about Left 4 Dead but I do enjoy the games and I`m glad I downloaded it.The Passing stars the Left 4 Dead 2 survivors and Left 4 Dead 1 survivors. Ellis has a crush for Zoey, and Rochell might for Francis. The new features like foot lockers and Fallen Survivors uncommon common infected change the gameplay a bit too. Fallen Survivors are survivors that became zombie. They run away for some reason but if you kill then you get something nice like pills,Health pack stuff like that. Foot lockers once opened have tons of one item. They help out when you are playing on expert. Passing also has the golf club melee wepon. Nothing new just another cool melee wepon. The firearm in the passing is the M60 heavy machine gun. The gun is rare and ammo runs out fast. It is fun to tear up the zombies with this gun. Other than the stuff I listed it is pretty much the same game. When I play it over and over the stuff the survivors go on about changes and is funny like Left 4 Dead is. Passing is not the best DLC ever but still worth buying if you like Left 4 Dead.

Summary

the passing was probably the first DLC pack that i peed my paints about. it wasn't the fact that you got this big awesome gun. it wasn't the fact of you could play a different mode of a online game every week. it was all because of the original survivors of L4D1. but my dreams of playing as them once again where faded fast. bill dies and you can't even play as the other 3, there just here to help at the end :-[. now i already covered the gameplay, controls, music, replayability in my L4D2 review so if you want to find out about those, go read my review of L4D2. now I'm going to cover new online and new features.

new features-like i said the original survivors are in the game but that's not all. a new special weapon, the M60 holds up to 150 bullets and is very powerful. there's also the driver (golf club) which is just a re-skin of the katana but if you ask me, i would rather knock of the head of a zombie with a golf club. but the thing i LOVED the most was the foot lockers. these things are filled with a infinite supply of pipe bombs, Molotov's, pills, and adrenaline. find a locker full with adrenaline, and you could go faster then sonic the hedgehog!

online-the new online add on is mutations. every week there is a new online mode of gameplay. my favorite was chainsaw massacre. the only weapon you get is a chainsaw with infinite gas. YES!

verdict-i think the passing is well worth your MP, and for you PC users, free of steam. the only problem i had was that bill dies. you should buy it now!

Mutations were good everything else not to good

Summary

Let me just start off by saying this is not worth the 560 microsoft points tag. This dlc was okay at best. The new campaign takes place between dead center and dark carnival. The car you got from the mall has to stop because there is a bridge that needs to be lowered. YOu will meet up with 3 of the original survivors but they are only cameos, not playable characters. The campaign wasnt good because it was short(only 3 missions) and your escape was basicly just a copy and paste of dead center where you collect gas cans. What made this dlc better was the weekly mutations. The mutations are like double xp weekend in halo 3, except they are weekly and don't have xp. The mutations are almost always fun and creative but if you wont be playing the mutations, this dlc will lead to major disapointments
